C.I.T. PROGRAMS & FORMS
What is the C.I.T. Program about?
The C.I.T. Program is an opportunity for the girls to work on their leadership skills.
The counsellor-in-training program at Oconto is a two-year program for girls sixteen and seventeen years of age. In the first year, each sixteen-year-old girl attends camp for one month. In this four-week session she concentrates on her leadership skills and improving in the activity that she wishes to teach as a counsellor. During this time she is working with the campers under the close supervision of a counsellor. In the second year of the program each seventeen-year-old girl attends camp for nine weeks. Over these two months, her time is spent learning how to demonstrate and teach her activities. Under the supervision of a senior staff member, she becomes jointly responsible for a group of four to eight campers, an integral part of her summer leadership training. The second year C.I.T., also known as a Semi Counsellor, is given an honorarium at the completion of the summer.
Quarter Counsellor (Q.C.)
The Quarter Counsellor program (or what we like to call the Q.C. Program) is our first year of the Counsellor-In-Training program. 16-years old girls are eligible for the program, as long as they have achieved their "Basic C" in canoeing.
How long do the Q.C.'s stay at camp?
The Q.C. Program is one month long. Participants can choose to come in either July or August. The program is the same in both months. The girls all live in their own "special land" that is off limits to the rest of camp. It is here that they do sessions together and also work on Q.C. All Camp. The girls also go on a four-day canoe trip together at the beginning of camp where they really bond together as a group and set goals for the month.
Who is the Q.C. Director?
The person in charge of the program is carefully selected. Typically, she is a staff member who has been coming to camp for a long period of time. Usually, she has been a Section Head and therefore has been in a position of leadership. Past Q. C. Directors at Oconto have been school teachers, doctors, post-graduate students, or other qualified leaders.

The Semi Counsellor Program (Semi)
The Semi Counsellor Program (or what we like to call Semi Program) is the second year of our two-year Counsellor-In-Training Program. 17-years old girls are eligible for the program as long as they have achieved their "Basic D" in canoeing.
How long do the Semis stay at camp for?
The Semi Program is for the full two-months of camp. The Semis are treated like counsellors. They are assigned a cabin group of campers, they teach an activity and they are entitled to days-off. They are placed in one section for July and another section for August.

What is the "Basic C" in canoeing?
The "Basic C" is part of the Ontario Recreational Canoeing Association's flat-water canoeing levels. We offer this level as part of our canoeing program at camp but it can also be achieved at most Canoe Schools across Ontario. As canoeing is an integral part of our camp, we feel it is very important that our aspiring counsellors have in-depth knowledge of canoeing.
